UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, seeks to build a pool of potential candidates to work as interpreters/translators from Arabic/Kurdish/Farsi/Pashto/Urdu to Bulgarian and/or English for Participatory Assessment exercises within the Age, Gender and Diversity mainstreaming process. Participatory assessment is a process of building partnerships with refugee women and men of all ages and backgrounds by promoting meaningful participation through structured dialogue. Participatory assessment includes holding separate discussions with women, girls, boys, and men, including adolescents, in order to gather accurate information on the specific protection risks they face and the underlying causes, to understand their capacities, and to hear their proposed solutions.

THE POSITION:
UNHCR is seeking to create a pool of interpreters who are dynamic and proactive team players, with a strong interest to enhance the accountability to affected populations work of UNHCR towards improving the lives of asylum-seekers and refugees in Bulgaria.
The selected interpreters will work closely with the UNHCR team and will contribute to the UNHCR’s strategic directions in the area of protection and integration of refugees in Bulgaria.
Duties and responsibilities
• Provides simultaneous or consecutive interpretation from the said languages as per the AGD Participatory Assessment methodology.
• Translates related materials from the respective language (Arabic, Kurdish, Farsi, Pashto or Urdu) to Bulgarian/English and/or vice versa.
• Responds to queries relating to the area of responsibility.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE will:
• Possess a high school diploma.
• Be fluent in Arabic, Kurdish, Farsi, Pashto and/or Urdu, with advanced writing and editing skills. Additional languages are desirable, but not essential.
• Have excellent communication skills with strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
• Demonstrate a genuine desire to learn and develop.
• Be highly organized and have good attention to detail.
• Be able to multi-task and to prioritize workload.
• Be a flexible, team-player.
• Previous experience of working with asylum-seekers and refugees is an advantage.
• Previous experience of satisfactorily interpreting in a refugee context is an advantage.
• Previous experience as a social worker is an advantage.

CONDITIONS
Contract entitlement shall be as per the respective agenda of UNHCR advocacy activities in 2021.
The selected candidates will be contracted under Individual Contractor contracts in accordance with the UNHCR Rules and Regulations.
This contract is neither a regular employment with UNHCR, nor does it imply such prospects on the basis of this contract.
Selection in the pool of suitable interpreters does not entitle the individual to any payment from UNHCR unless UNHCR has requested her/his interpretation/translation service and he/she has delivered the required service.
