Resident at the Radiology Department

Organisational position (theimmediate superior)
The resident refers to the Chief Consultant at the department of Diagnostic Imaging. 
Manner of employment In compliance with the collective agreement between the
Association of Junior Physicians (Foreningen af Yngre Laeger) and
the Danish Regions.
The department profile 
The Department of Radiology consists of several sections located in
Aalborg University Hospital, Section North and South, Fars?, Hobro
and Dronninglund.
The annual number of examinations at the department is approximately 250,000. About 250 people are employed in the department, mainly in the area of the three large staff groups;
physicians, nursing staff, and secretaries.
The department carries out examinations and treatments within all areas of radiology. It is highly well equipped with modern equipment facilities and advanced PACS and RIS.

The department takes part in the education of physicians, medical students, radiographer students, secretary trainees, and other trade groups.
The group of physicians is at the moment divided into 9 sections:
Neuro-radiology, musculoskeletal radiology, gastro radiology, vascular interventions, thorax radiology, oncoradiology, uroradiology, mamma radiology, and pediatric radiology. The
individual sections cooperate in different sections, which make the following sections: Neuro-ortho, gastro-vascular, thorax-onco, uroped and mamma screening.
The department has 2 types of duties: The on-ward duty, typically carried out by residents and on-call, typically carried out by senior residents and staff specialists. We are working on establishing a special type of duty for neuro-radiology an on-call duty for chief
physicians. Here, experienced staff specialists will be able to participate.

Primary funtion 
Reference is made to the goal description of The Danish Health and Medicines Authority for residents. The resident must be able to carry out uncomplicated x-ray examinations and evaluate x-ray and CT examinations. The resident will learn simple ultrasound examinations and
becomes acquainted with MR.
The resident conducts minor conferences. Every resident has a competence licence, which describes the functions he or she are able to and allowed to participate in.
The resident participates in the duty work in accordance with the competence license and competency assessment. The resident receives formalised teaching and on the job training,
so that he or she independently will be able to carry out image interpretation, diagnostics and descriptions. It is expected that the resident spends time on literature studies –
partly from the syllabus partly ad hoc. Moreover, the resident must study relevant scientific literature independently.
The resident must function in all sections on a basis of a schedule that ensures a stay in each section. It is expected that the resident participates actively in collaboration with the other radiological physicians regarding the individual examination modalities so that an effective and rational utilisation of these is achieved.

Formal area of responsibility 
The resident must independently be able to evaluate, describe, and communicate findings in compliance with the competence license. Both during the daily shifts and the duties.
The resident must participate on equal terms with other residents and students in duty work in compliance with the duty instructions of the department. The resident must participate in and independently carry out conferences in relation to teaching and experiencing.
The resident must be able to cooperate with colleagues and radiographers and be able to take on the professional management of the individual physician managed procedures
(interventions/transilluminations/ultrasound).

Competence 
The resident must be a legitimated physician and have permission to practise independently as a physician. The elementary prerequisites of the work in a radiological department are clinical skills on a level that correspond to a completed final university examination and the clinical basic
education. A wide clinical theoretical and/or practical experience and mastery of anatomy is crucial prerequisites for interpretation of the radiological examinations.
The resident must be a good communicator with a focus on oral contact to clinical colleagues, radiographers and patients. The resident must be team oriented and willing to take part in the
duty team on equal terms with the colleagues.

Qualifications 
The resident must be a legitimated physician and have permission to practise independently as a physician. The resident must be extrovert and strong in patient contact and have the ability to understand and carry out a coherent treatment plan. The resident must be able to adjust to a diverse department where 2 out of 3 physicians have another background than Danish.
The resident should preferably be able to speak two other languages besides his or her mother tongue.
