For more than 5 years, Caritas Sofia has been working with refugee children living in Sofia, through projects including The Refugee Project, the Sv. Anna information centre, mission:future and activities in Busmantsi detention centre.

Refugee and asylum seeker children face significant hurdles in accessing school education and/or integrating in Bulgaria. Before they are in school, the Bulgarian Government has no integration activities for children or their parents, so there are many children living in the reception centres who are bored and under-stimulated.

Now we hope to create child friendly spaces in Harmanli reception centre for asylum seekers and refugees. The Childrens Workers with Arabic or Farsi or Kurdish will work with the play facilitators to ensure that appropriate recreational activities are offered in the child-friendly spaces, and that any children with extra support needs are referred to other services.



Tasks

- Building up rapport with children, youth and parents in the camp.

- Working with the Play Facilitator – Children and Recreation Facilitator - Youth to develop a mechanism for early identification of children with support needs, development of a personalised action plan and referral to appropriate services

- Translating for the Play Facilitator and Recreation Facilitator to ensure good communication with children and parents.

- Collecting parental permission for e.g. children to participate in activities or to have their photos taken

- Liaising with the children, youth and parents living in the camp to ensure that their ideas and feedback are taken into account when planning recreational and educational activities, and sharing the timetable of activities with them.

- Supporting the Play Facilitator and Recreation Facilitator to lead activities and facilitate play, and to ensure that there is continuous supervision by a member of the team in the safe spaces from 9-5 Monday to Friday.

- Liaising with coordinators of the Refugee Project and any other organisations delivering ongoing activities within the camps to ensure a cooperative approach.

- Writing personalised action plans and timely reports about all children referred to other services, and seeking feedback from agencies they are referred to.

- Liaising regularly with the Play Facilitator – Children and Recreation Facilitator - Youth about any issues and successes.

Person specification

- Experience of working with children, youth and parents – a degree in teaching, pedagogy or social work is an advantage.

- Fluent in either Farsi or Arabic or Kurdish and either English or Bulgarian. Translation experience and knowledge of other languages and would be an advantage.

- Familiarity with child rights and child protection.
